Tacoma Woman with Terminal Diagnosis Achieves Dream of Sleeping Comfortably with New Husband, Thanks to Dream Foundation and Sleep Number

Press Release | June 25, 2019

Tacoma, Wash. Local Woman given Sleep Number® 360 Smart Bed

Santa Barbara, Calif.— Newlywed Sylvia, from Tacoma, Wash., turned to Dream Foundation, a national organization that fulfills final Dreams for terminally-ill adults, for help when the onset of pancreatic cancer left her in pain and in fear of never sleeping alongside her beloved husband again. Dream Foundation partner Sleep Number®, a Minneapolis-based sleep and technology company, and Sleep Number’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Shelly Ibach, were eager to help. The company gifted Sylvia a Sleep Number 360® iLE Limited Edition Smart Bed and Flex Fit® smart adjustable base, which automatically responds to the sleeper during the night to keep them comfortable. The bed was delivered on June 15th; press are invited to attend a gathering on June 27th to celebrate Sylvia’s new bed and her improved chances for restorative sleep.

Sylvia was planning her wedding in December 2018 when she received the devastating diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Sylvia and her now husband, Reginald, married quickly, surrounded by friends and family, including her four children and grandson.

Soon after, Sylvia reached out to Dream Foundation. Hospital beds only sleep one, and Sylvia wanted more than anything to spend time snuggled comfortably with her husband. Sylvia explains, “Since my diagnosis, I have spent countless hours in my bed . . . on a mattress that I have had for almost 30 years. My body aches all the time from being in bed for so many hours.”

Sleep Number has been helping Dream Foundation make final Dreams come true since January 2018. When another Dream recipient was in urgent need of quality sleep, Dream Foundation Dream Coordinator, Megan Higgins, reached out to the company. To date, Sleep Number has donated four beds to Dream recipients, including Sylvia’s this month.

Dream Foundation will celebrate Sylvia’s final Dream and Sleep Number’s generous contribution and with a Dream Delivery, an intimate and joyful gathering, on Thursday, June 27th. Kathryn Ohtake, a representative from Genentech, one of Dream Foundation’s Mission Corporate Partners, will host.

“Comfort is essential to our Dream recipients at the end of life,” says Dream Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Kisa Heyer. “We are incredibly thankful to Ms. Ibach and Sleep Number for providing this comfort – both figuratively and literally.”

Press are invited to the Dream Delivery. Address will be provided upon confirmation of attendance.
