Local Couple Helped by Sanibel Community, Renews Vows After Brain Cancer Diagnosis

Sanibel Island is often described as a paradise. For Abby Killion, it’s a place where the community helped make one of her last dreams a reality.

Abby and her husband Josh are from Pendleton, Indiana, but met in Florida in 2005. In December, the couple will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, and they have always wanted to renew their vows for the special day.

But Abby was diagnosed with terminal glioblastoma in August 2025 and was told she only had 12-15 months to live. This caused her dream to become a reality earlier than expected.

“We always had plans. We hadn’t made any plans, but, you know, we’re kind of last-minute people anyway,” Josh Killion said. “Once we got this diagnosis, it was like, okay, we need to speed this up a little bit.”

They realized they couldn’t do it on their own, so they enlisted help from the Dream Foundation, the only national dream-granting organization for terminally ill adults, veterans and service members.
